The most useful home automations are often small, contextual and unglamorous—but they still need understandable triggers, overrides and failure behaviour.
Small automations that quietly earn their keep
A rolling collection of lighting, heating, energy, reminders and environmental automations that are too small for grand architecture diagrams.
Prefer narrow automations with visible state and manual control. Use presence, energy price, time and environmental readings only when they make the outcome noticeably better.
A growing collection is in everyday use, including lighting, heating, announcements, reminders, appliance control and device-health checks. Individual notes will be added as behaviour is refined.
Abstract architecture / sensitive detail removed
Current collection
- Presence-aware bedroom lighting and lighting scenes
- Heating and TRV control
- Off-peak electricity-aware behaviour
- Alexa announcements and bin-day reminders
- Towel-rail, air-purifier and humidity routines
- Low-battery and device-availability checks
These are deliberately presented as a collection. A small automation only becomes a full project page when the problem, trade-offs or failure mode teaches something worth keeping.
Notes to future me
What this project is teaching me.
- The best automation often removes one repeated irritation.
- Manual control is part of the design, not an exception.
