A cabinet can create a better growing environment, but lights and airflow need consistent control and the enclosed space needs to remain observable.
Smart plant cabinet
A slightly over-engineered home for plants, with controlled light, ventilation and a path towards useful environmental feedback.
Improve the physical cabinet first, then use Zigbee smart plugs and Home Assistant for understandable schedules. Add environmental sensing only where it can inform a real control decision.
The cabinet is an active build. Lighting, ventilation and interior treatment are being developed; environmental monitoring and feedback control remain planned rather than claimed as finished.
Abstract architecture / sensitive detail removed
The physical build comes first
The cabinet needs suitable reflective or light interior treatment, sensible ventilation and safe cable routing before automation adds value. Software cannot compensate for a poor physical design.
Useful automation
Home Assistant can provide schedules, manual overrides and availability monitoring for the Zigbee-controlled loads. Future sensing may add temperature or humidity feedback, but only once the desired operating range and response are clear.
Notes to future me
What this project is teaching me.
- Physical airflow and surface treatment matter before software does.
- A smart plug is a control point, not proof of a good growing environment.
- Sensing should answer a question rather than decorate a dashboard.
