Making Home Assistant failures visible

Monitoring unavailable devices, stale state, low batteries and automation behaviour so “smart” systems fail loudly enough to fix.

01 / Problem

Automations can silently degrade when batteries fade, integrations become unavailable or reported state stops matching the physical world.

02 / Approach

Build small, actionable checks for availability, battery condition and state mismatch; notify with enough context to diagnose without turning every transient event into noise.

03 / Current result

Monitoring patterns are running and continue to evolve as real failure modes appear. The goal is earlier diagnosis, not a claim that every device failure is detected.

Abstract architecture / sensitive detail removed

The useful failure signal

A single low-battery dashboard is easy to ignore. A useful operational signal explains what has changed, which behaviour depends on it and whether the condition persists long enough to matter.

Notes to future me

What this project is teaching me.

  1. Alerting needs ownership and a useful next action.
  2. State mismatch can be more important than an unavailable flag.
